Zinc oxide (أكسيد الزنك): the mineral that sits on top
Every ingredient card on this site keeps coming back to one step: sunscreen. Zinc oxide is the sunscreen ingredient worth understanding on its own, because it is the oldest one and the gentlest one.
What it is
Zinc oxide is a mineral (a form of the metal zinc, processed into a fine white powder). In sunscreen it works as a UV filter. You will also find it in diaper creams, calamine lotion, and acne products — it has been used on human skin for a very long time.
What it does
It sits on the surface of your skin and blocks the sun there. It is broad spectrum: unlike many filters that cover only UVB (the burning rays), zinc oxide covers both UVB and UVA (the aging and pigmentation rays) across almost the whole range. It is also photostable — it does not break down in sunlight the way some chemical filters do, so it protects you for as long as it stays on.
Where the “chemical-free” claim goes wrong
Mineral sunscreens are often marketed as “chemical-free.” That is not true. Zinc oxide is a chemical, like water is. The honest difference is the mechanism: chemical filters (like avobenzone or octinoxate) absorb UV and convert it to heat; mineral filters mostly reflect and scatter it (and absorb some too). Both are filters. “Physical” and “mineral” are the fair words; “chemical-free” is marketing.
Who it suits
- Sensitive and easily irritated skin — it is one of the least irritating UV filters available, and it rarely causes allergic reactions.
- Babies and children (in the standard diaper-cream concentrations and in sunscreens made for them).
- People dealing with pigmentation and dark spots: because it blocks UVA well, it is often the filter dermatologists point to when the goal is to stop dark spots from darkening further.
Where it goes wrong
The white cast. Zinc oxide is white, and on medium and deep skin tones it can leave a grey-white film. Smaller “nano” particles reduce this, and tinted formulas (iron oxides) hide it better — those same iron oxides add a bonus: they block visible light, which matters for melasma. A thicker, chalky layer that you never reapply protects you less than a sheer layer you reapply every two hours.
How to use it
- Apply it as the last step of your morning routine (after moisturiser; wait the 5–10 minutes after urea, as the urea card explains).
- Use enough. The tested amount is roughly two finger-lengths for the face and neck.
- Reapply every two hours in real sun exposure, and after sweating or towelling.
One true thing
Zinc oxide does not make your skin better. It keeps the sun from making it worse. Most of what people call “anti-aging” is, honestly, sun protection done daily for years.
