Second in our ingredient cards: the humectant that shows up in almost everything, and what it actually does.
The card
- What it is: glycerin (also written glycerol) is a small water-soluble molecule that attracts and holds water. It is a humectant, not an oil.
- Main jobs: draws water into the outer skin layer, keeps it there, and helps other ingredients spread and feel less greasy.
- Typical use: 2–10% in most creams and serums; higher in some hydrating products and masks.
- Irritation: very low. One of the best-tolerated cosmetic ingredients there is.
- Acne / pore-clogging risk: very low (it is water-soluble, not oily).
- Safety: long-established and well studied; considered safe in pregnancy.
What it actually does
Dry skin is usually skin that has lost water. Glycerin works by holding water in the top layer: some comes from deeper skin, some from the product, and in humid air some from the air itself. That extra water makes the surface softer and more flexible, and it supports the enzymes your skin uses to renew itself.
It is also a workhorse in the formula. It dissolves many actives, improves texture, and reduces the greasy feel of oils. That is why it sits near the top of so many ingredient lists.
How much is enough
Most products do the job between 2 and 10%. More is not automatically better; at high concentrations and in very dry air, glycerin can feel sticky and, in theory, can pull water from the skin rather than hold it. That is why it is almost always paired with an occlusive (like petrolatum or a plant oil) that seals the water in.
Who it suits
Almost everyone, especially dry, tight, flaky or dehydrated skin. It is gentle enough for sensitive skin and for people using acids or retinoids, and it is a standard base for baby products.
Who should be careful
Very few people. A small number react to it, and in a dry climate a rich glycerin product can feel tacky. If your skin stings after a pure glycerin product, layer it under something heavier rather than using it on its own.
Two myths
- “Glycerin is a cheap filler.” No. It has a real job and it does it well. Cheap does not mean useless.
- “Glycerin dries your skin.” At normal levels in a normal formula, the opposite. Only undiluted glycerin in very dry air can backfire, and almost nobody uses it that way.
Where to find it
Look for “glycerin” or “glycerol” near the top of the list — the higher it is, the more hydrating the product tends to be. For dry skin, pair it with an occlusive later in the routine.
